Old Oswestry Hill Fort (Caer Ogyrfan) - Oswestry

Old Oswestry Hill Fort (Caer Ogyrfan) Caer Ogyrfan (Less than 1 mile away) is an Iron Age hill fort dating back to around 600BC, but it was also the location of a Bronze age settlement. The Welsh name means City of Gogyrfan.

According to legend, Gogyrfan was father to Queen Guinevere and therefore father in law to King Arthur. This fort was said to be Guinevere’s birthplace.

The site is one of the best preserved examples of a hill fort in Britain, covering 40 acres and consisting of several ramparts. There are information panels around the site and entry is free.

Other ancient sites also exist in the area, such as Sycharth, the birthplace of Owain Glyndŵr at Llangedwyn (11 miles away) and Offa’s Dyke – a man made defensive boundary that stretches 177 miles from Prestatyn to Chepstow.
